Topsy Cottage Beeshack
Ever wondered what it’s like to open a live beehive and witness thousands of honey bees working together? This unforgettable beekeeping experience offers the chance to get up close to one of nature’s most remarkable insects under the guidance of one of our experienced beekeepers.
After a welcome and safety briefing, you’ll be provided with a protective bee suit before heading to the apiary. Together, we’ll open a working hive and explore the incredible inner workings of a honey bee colony.
As you inspect the hive frame by frame, you’ll discover how the colony is organised, learn to identify the queen, workers and drones (where possible), and gain an insight into the seasonal life of a hive. Along the way, your beekeeper will explain how bees communicate, produce honey, care for their young and play a vital role in supporting our environment through pollination.
This is a genuinely hands-on experience. You’ll have the opportunity to handle hive frames, ask as many questions as you like and see beekeeping in action, making it ideal for complete beginners, nature lovers and anyone curious about these extraordinary insects.

Please Note
Beekeeping is an outdoor activity, and every hive is different. The experience will vary depending on the season, weather and the natural behaviour of the bees on the day. While we aim to help you spot the queen bee, this cannot always be guaranteed.
Participants should be comfortable around insects and must wear the protective clothing provided. Although honey bees are generally calm when managed correctly, there is always a small risk of being stung. This experience is not suitable for anyone with a known allergy to bee stings.
